The hottest weather in Tokyo is from July-September. Usually by October the temperatures cool and the extreme humidity goes down. There are hostels all over Tokyo- I have personally seen Tokyo International Hostel which is just steps from Idabashi Station. It is on the 18th and 19th floors of a modern office building and offers a great view.
As for the best time of year to visit? April is so beautiful, with the cherry trees blooming everywhere, but November offers the colors of Autumn. Winter is sometimes a bit cold (not to me, I’m from a much colder place!), but you can see Christmas and New Year rolled into one. You should try to avoid big holiday weeks, as many facilities close then and there are crowds in some places.
I like your idea about combining a few days at a nice hotel with hostels. I did the same thing when I brought a friend here, before I moved back, and it was fun. You should bring as much money as you can afford (as you will not run out of stuff to buy) and a little more as an emergency cushion. There have been many people on this forum asking how to get money from overseas because they ran out!

there are quite a few sites that you can search that will likely show you great hotels at the best prices available. check out the website BookMe and you will be able to compare prices on all the reputable travel sites in just a couple minutes. it’s very convenient and will save you a bunch of time and money. Also, make sure you buy them online… otherwise they charge much higher fees for phone orders. good luck.
